How it works

Pick the winner before the match starts.

ETS Predictions is a free game for speculating about FRC match outcomes. Pick the alliance you think will win with play points that have no real-world value.

Matches

Every FRC match has two sides: Red wins and Blue wins. Picks open 24 hours before each match, once The Blue Alliance has published the schedule.

Making a pick

Each pick costs 5 points. The percentage on each side is the community forecast: how likely that side looks to win right now. The less likely a side looks, the more a correct pick on it earns. At 50% a correct pick earns 10 points, and at 25% it earns 20.

What a pick can earn is locked in the moment you make it. Later picks move the forecast for everyone after you, but never change what yours can earn. If your pick is missed, it earns nothing, and the points you spent on it are gone.

Each pick nudges the forecast a little toward its side, so when you make several picks at once, each one earns slightly less than the one before. Before you confirm, you see exactly how many points you'd earn if you're correct.

An example

The forecast gives Red 62%, so a correct pick on Red earns about 8.1 points. You make 20 picks on Red for 100 points, and you lock in 153 points if correct. If Red wins, you earn 153, a net gain of 53. If Blue wins, your picks are missed and the 100 points are spent. Your picks moved Red to 69%, so the next player's picks on Red earn a little less.

The starting forecast

So the forecast means something before anyone picks, each match starts at Statbotics' EPA prediction, or at 50/50 when there isn't one. From there, it moves only as players pick a side. Points for correct picks come from the game, not from other players, and the points spent on missed picks leave the game.

When picks close and results come in

  • Picks close 5 minutes before the match is expected to start. At events that queue matches with Nexus, that's Nexus's estimate, so it follows how far behind the event is running; otherwise it's the schedule. Picks close earlier once the teams are on the field or the previous qualification match posts its score.
  • Matches resolve on The Blue Alliance's official result, a few minutes after it's posted.
  • A tied qualification match returns the points for every pick.
  • Picks made after a match actually started have their points returned, so watching the stream doesn't help.
  • If a match is removed, its teams change, or no result appears, the match is cancelled and the points for every pick are returned.
  • Picks can't be undone, and you can only pick one side of a match: once you've picked Red, you can add more picks on Red but not pick Blue.

Points

  • New players start with 1,000 points. Deleting your account and signing up again with the same Google or Discord login doesn't give them again.
  • Claim 100 free points every day.
  • If you drop below 50 points with no picks waiting on a result, you can refill to 250 once a day.
  • You can spend up to 2,000 points on picks for any one match.

Points are just for fun and have no real-world value. They can't be purchased, transferred or exchanged for money or prizes, and they never will be.
